Pursuant to our time honored and cherished tradition of offering write ups of whiskies that no longer exist, we present unto you a resplendent look at Elijah Craig 12.
Formerly a value bottle mainstay of the mighty bourbon hunters, for years Elijah Craig could be procured for under $30. And for a 12 year old age stated product, that wasn’t a bad deal at all. I myself snagged a bottle from time to time. Heaven Hill, met with a significant challenge of not enough supply to meet the demand of the Golden Age we find ourselves in, in order to grow the brand decided to forgo the age statement of 12 years while keeping the price the same. It is now called Small Batch, which will be reviewed in the coming months. If you are tempted to mourn the 12, keep in mind that the new version is batched from barrels aged at least 8 years old to 12. 8 year old bourbon is still a pretty good deal.
If you’re lucky, you may be able to find the “12” in some stores, even a few bottles can be found online. Bottled at 47% ABV with a heavy corn mash bill, this Kentucky Straight favorite in its signature bottle is yet another casualty in the NAS campaign. Here’s to the good ole-days…
SWC Review
Nose- Nice, big oak. Plenty of vanilla. Buttered popcorn. Some heat with wintergreen. Butterscotch. Grassy.
Taste- Simple oak and vanilla. Light, warmed caramel and orange citrus. Thick with black pepper. Clove.
Finish- Long with barrel char. Vanilla with slight citrus. Ruby red grapefruit. Cellar funk. Hot.
Comment- Great nose. A classic, but the Small Batch version shouldn’t divert too much. Simple but recommended.
